Dr Dhruba Jyoti Borah

Professor (Dr.) Dhruba Jyoti Borah is a distinguished medical professional, educator, administrator, and renowned intellectual from Assam. With a career spanning decades, he has made significant contributions to both the medical field and Assam’s literary and cultural landscape.

Dr. Borah is currently serving as a Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology at Gauhati Medical College (since 1996) and as the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of Jorhat Medical College (since 2005). His administrative experience includes a 12-year tenure as Joint Director of Medical Education (DME), Assam.

Born on November 27, 1955, Dr. Borah completed his early education in Jorhat before pursuing his medical degrees at Assam Medical and Gauhati Medical Colleges. He has consistently excelled academically, having secured the top position in Assam in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Examination (1972) and later achieving the first rank in his MBBS examinations from Assam Medical College (1977). His postgraduate training in Medicine was completed at Gauhati Medical College in 1982, with further specialization in Cardiology and Echocardiography at G.B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi in 1986. He was also honored with the prestigious Dr. D.P. Basu Award for young scientists by the Association of Cardiac Surgeons (ACS).

Over the years, Dr. Borah has held several important positions, including Registrar of Nephrology, Resident Physician in Cardiology, Assistant Professor of Medicine, and eventually becoming a Professor of Medicine in 1996. He has been instrumental in shaping medical education and policy in Assam, including the drafting of the Assam Rural Health Regulatory Authority Act and the rules and regulations of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences.

Dr. Borah’s contributions extend beyond medicine. As an accomplished writer, historian, and social scientist, he has written extensively on topics such as medieval Assamese history, peasant movements, and tribal autonomy. His literary works, columns, and novels are highly regarded in Assam, earning him respect as a cultural icon in the state.

He continues to serve in several prestigious capacities, including being a member of the General Council and Executive Council of the Medical Council of India (MCI), Chairman of MCI’s Ethics Committee, and member of various national and parliamentary scientific committees.

Dr. Borah’s multifaceted career reflects his commitment to both medical excellence and the preservation of Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
